Workington Comets v Rye House Rockets
Saturday July 24th, Derwent Park – Tapes up 7:00pm
Premier League
Right from the off the Comets made their intensions clear in a meeting that seen the Rockets purely outclassed by a very dominant Workington side
For the second week running Ian Thomas witnessed his side destroy the opposition again breaking 60 points, definitely a talking point of the meeting has to be the performance of Kenny Ingalls who was set to collect his first paid maximum if it wasn’t for his fall in the twelfth heat when on a 5-1 with Andre Compton, very encouraging stuff from the American who is now beginning to win over the Comets faithfuls after coming into the team to replace John Branney.
Light drizzle was persistent throughout the day in Workington and surrounding areas but come 7 o’clock the track was in top condition and produced some very fast times.
The standard was set as Comets paring of Rusty and Cookie gated and left Sundstrom and Hughes behind to take maximum points in the opening heat. Robbie Kessler made a flyer in the reserves race only to be passed by Lawson on the 1stbend, on the back straight Ingalls tried to join his team mate riding inches behind Kessler on 1 wheel, to the everyone’s amazement he managed to keep it down and eventually made his pass on the 3rdlap to join Lawson for another home 5-1.
With Kildemand missing for the night Rich Lawson was used as the rider replacement in heat 3 – in the second attempt of running the race due to an unsatisfactory start Andre made a cracking 1st& 2ndturn using the grip on the outside to power ahead but he was closely followed by Neath who in turn was pressured by Lawson, Ekberg was way at the back.
Schrammy gated and was gone in the 4thheat where again the excitement came from Ingalls who picked his moment to pick off Jordan Frampton. The following race seen Sundstrom introduced as a tactical rider for double points but he only managed 2ndplace behind Andre Compton who had to ride out of his skin to keep the Swede at bay.
Later on in heat 11 Chris Schramm battled hard and pushed to take the lead from Sundstrom the pair were just about shoulder to shoulder going over the finish line with the Rye House man being called 1stby referee Dishington. Heat 12 was looking like another Comets 5-1 until Ingalls slipped off entering turn 3 leaving Compton to carry on alone for the win ahead of Neath and Branford.
Cookie was disqualified from heat 13 after a tight 1stbend saw Linus Sundstrom hit the deck, some may feel it was an incident where an all 4 back could have been issued but it was the refs decision that counted. Perhaps if the scores were a little closer the Comets fans may have shown more concern over the decision…? In the re-run captain Schramm rode a blinder and rode out wide to take the lead coming out of the 2ndbend and that was that!
Superb from the Comets paring of Ingalls and Lawson in heat 14, Kenny flew from the gate to take the lead and Rich went high on the 3rdturn to pass Ekberg on the outside, meanwhile Robert Branford had fallen at the back and without any red stop lights appearing the riders rode pass him whilst he was stood on the 1stbend luckily no one was hurt and the race was awarded yet another Comets 5-1. It was announced that the referee had made a mistake and put the wrong red lights on.
Possibly the best was saved till last as Cookie made up for his disqualification in heat 13 by working his way from last to 1stafter making a terrible start Cook dived up the inside of Andre and Linus and gave chase on the leading Frampton eventually passing him on the inside of bend 4 a very mature ride from Cookie who is proving to be a real out and out number 1 around Derwent Park.
Make sure you come to cheer on the Comets next Saturday as Joe Screen, Travis Mcgowan along with ex Comet and local favourite John Branney are in town with the Glasgow Tigers!
