PRESS RELEASE No 22 – May 4th
WORKINGTON Comets have now strung four straight wins together after their disappointing start to the campaign saw them lose five Premier Trophy matches in a row.
Monday’s 57-35 home win over Stoke Potters got their Premier League season off to the best possible start and they will ride three matches in quick succession this week-end, looking for more points.
The Comets travel to Somerset on Friday; host Redcar on Saturday (7pm) and then travel to Stoke on Sunday for the re-arranged fixture which follows Saturday’s postponement at Loomer Road.
Comets owner Keith Denham said: “We are not the finished article but I think we can take a lot of positives out of the way results have been going for us of late.
“People were quick to criticise when we lost those five on the bounce and I hope they are equally swift in singing the team’s praises after our run of victories.
“The performances at DerwentPark have been eye-catching, with some excellent racing, but the stand-out riders have been Craig Cook and Peter Kildemand who have been nothing short of amazing.
“Cookie, for a lad who has only had a year’s competitive speedway, is awesome. The sky’s the limit for him and when the averages change I’m not concerned about where he has to fit into the body of the team. He’s beating the top men now anyway so he’ll be comfortable wherever he has to ride.
“Some of his performances this season have been fantastic and anyone who enjoys their speedway will take great pleasure in watching him perform.
“As for Peter, I think he will prove to be the most exciting newcomer to British speedway this season. He has been outstanding, an exciting rider who has very quickly established himself as a crowd favourite.
“Jan Staechmann knows his speedway and he was singing Peter’s praises when he recommended him to us. I’m so glad we took him up on it because he has been excellent.”
Kildemand spent last week back home in Denmark and after finishing second in the quarter final of the Danish senior championship he won a heat of the Danish Under-21’s on Friday.
With Kildemand back; Andre Compton fit again after his shoulder injury and Rusty Harrison signed on a short-term deal Workington are back to a seven-man line-up again.
Compton did 20 laps at Scunthorpe over the weekend to test his shoulder problem and although he was still feeling a little niggle he gave it a go against Stoke and came through it with no ill effects and eight points against his name.
While the Comets are looking at three meetings on the bounce Compton will actually be doing four as he rides at Sheffield on Thursday in the British semi-final.
He will meet up with the rest of the team at Somerset on Friday where the Rebe ls have signed 24-year-old CzechRepublicstar Lubos Tomicek to replace Steve Boxall.
Tomicek returns to British racing after a brief spell with Belle Vue last year which was ended by injury, and he will make his debut in the home clash with Workington on Friday.
The Rebels still need to sign another rider to fill the gap created by Brent Werner's departure last week, and will make a further announcement in the coming days.
