PRESS RELEASE No 19 – April 21st
RUSTY Harrison will be back in Workington colours on Saturday after signing on a short-term deal with the Comets.
Then 28-year-old Australian, who lives in Workington, had not been fixed-up with a Premier League track this season after finishing last year at Birmingham.
It looked as though Harrison’s career would be over in 2008 when he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his stomach and was told at the time that he must not take part in any impact sports.
However - after seeking the necessary medical assurances, together with some training - he agreed a deal to again return with his first British club, Glasgow, in June last year.
Despite being a solid performer both home and for the Tigers he was then surprisingly axed from the Tigers side in mid-July to make way for William Lawson
He then joined Birmingham Brummies and finished the season with a 5-45 average which he will take into his return with the Comets.
Harrisonwill take the place of Adam Roynon at number five after the Barrow-based rider was taken out of two meetings at the week-end with a doctor’s certificate declaring he would be unavailable until further notice.
Before he finished the 2008 season early with King’s Lynn he had accumulated an average of 6.45.
In 2001 Harrison became Australian Under-21 Champion, [ after twice winning the Australian Under-16 Championship in 1995 and 1997.
In 2002 he was runner-up behind winnerTravis McGowanin the Australian Under-21 Championship.
Harrison made his debut in British speedway in 2000 riding for Glasgow Tigers before linking with the Comets where he stayed for three seasons, before moving to Edinburgh Monarchs in 2005.
In 2005 he also rode as a Reserve for Belle Vue Aces in the Elite League at number seven. He moved back to Workington in 2006 before riding for Stoke Potters in 2007 and then switched to the Stars for 2008.
He has been a member of successful Workington teams in three winning Premier League Fours.
Workington will be using rider replacment for Peter Kildemand on Saturday when they host Harrison’s first British club, Glasgow.
Kildemand, who has made a big impression with the Workington fans, is taking part in the Danish championships.
Comets’ skipper Andre Compton is not ready to resume on Saturday as he is still suffering from the torn shoulder tendons he suffered in last Friday’s fall at Edinburgh.
Workington will again use Thomas H. Jonasson who did well at Glasgow on Sunday, scoring ten and a bonus in the 48-42 win.
After five successive defeats in the Premier Triophy the Comets have put two successive wins together and want to finish their campaign with a third victory.
The meeting will revert to the Comets’ old start time of 7pm now the temorary road bridge has been opened over the Derwent.
