             PRESS RELEASE No 18 – April 20th

WORKINGTON have responded to comments by Adam Roynon on his own racing website, referring to his absence from the Comets team this week-end.

The Barrow-based rider posted a message on his website indicating that he had been fit to ride and in effect, he had been sacked by the Comets.

Roynon, battling hard regain his form and confidence after last season’s life-threatening crash, had taken a fall at Edinburghon Friday and a doctor’s note on Saturday indicated he would be out until further notice.

Today the Comets have reiterated the fact that he wasn’t allowed to ride due to a medical certificate which stated he couldn’t race until further notice. It was issued ahead of Saturday and Sunday when the Comets beat Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Team manager Ian Thomas says that what Adam has alleged on his website amounts to almost total fabrication.

He said: “We have not sacked Adam Roynon and after the meeting with the rider, his father, referee and track doctor I did not speak to him again for the rest of the evening. The story of me going out to ask for his race jacket is just not true.

“In fact Adam had been offered a further medical examination in the meeting we all had, but never responded and did not return for one.

“The problem is that this type of episode can end up as a slanging match so I don’t want to enlarge at this stage but I would certainly stress that we did not lie to the fans about Adam ahead of Saturday’s meeting.

“At Edinburghon Friday I asked Adam if he was ok after he fell in his second race and he said he had hurt his neck but would take one more ride. He did that and I replaced him for his final programmed race.

“There are many other issues.”

The absence of  Roynon and the subsequent internet postings have soured what should have been a celebratory week-end for the Comets fans.

The Workington team had responded superbly to the demands of the management “to get it sorted” with a gritty performance in defeat at Armadale on Friday and the victories over Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Thomas had demanded a big improvement after four straight defeats – two of them at home – and there had been a better effort in Friday’s defeat at Edinburgh.

“To follow-up with those two back-to-back victories was a superb response. The home match was terrific, the best meeting of the season and as near ten out of ten as you can possibly get.

“Then to go away and put in the effort again to beat the Tigers on their own track was a brilliant response to what I had asked of them,” he said.

Workington had been without skipper and number one Andre Compton for those two victories with Rene Bach and ThomasH Jonasson both admirable guests.

Compton crashed at Edinburgh on Friday and was left with damaged tendons in his shoulder and bruised ribs. He was forced to miss the two follow-up meetings with the Monarchs and the Tigers but expects to be fit to resume on Saturday when the Comets host Glasgowin the return.

However Workington will be without Peter Kildemand, fast becoming a huge crowd favourite with his all-action style. He is taking part in the Danish Championship.

Workington will revert to their usual 7pmstart time on Saturday when they take-on the Tigers at DerwentPark.   The 6-30pm start was introduced because of transport problems but the new bridge, making easier access in and out of the town, will be open on Wednesday
