PRESS RELEASE No 16 – April 9th
WORKINGTON Comets return to track action this week-end with home and away fixtures against the Newcastle Diamonds.
The Comets stage the home meeting on Saturday at DerwentPark(6-30pm) with the Diamonds hosting the return the following day at 5-30pm.
Workington have some ground to make-up in the Premier Trophy after their opening two defeats by Berwick Bandits over the Easter week-end.
They went down by a single point in a Good Friday thriller at DerwentParkand there were thirteen points between the two sides at Shielfield.
“It goes without saying we want to get our Trophy season up and running but it’s going to be tough against a Newcastle side who are regarded by a lot of people as potential Premier League champions.
“They have a strong top order and, of course, Mark Lemon was a very good guest for us last season, helping us to the Young Shield win,” said Thomas.
Newcastle have won at Edinburgh and Glasgow, before surprisingly losing at home to Glasgow– with all three matches going down to last heat deciders.
They will line-up at Derwent Park on Saturday – 1, Kenni Larsen; 2, Derek Sneddon, 3, Jason King, 4, Rene Bach, 5, Mark Lemon; 6, Dakota North, 7, Adam McKinna.
Workington will also be unchanged – 1, Andre Compton; 2, Richard Lawson; 3, Chris Schramm; 4, Peter Kildemand; 5, Adam Roynon; 6, Craig Cook, 7, John Branney.
Meanwhile the Comets have allowed Charles Wright to go out on loan in the National League.
Wright, whose career with the Comets was curtailed by a wrist operation last season, has re-joined his former track Buxton Hitmen.
He will be linking-up with Workington’s current in-form reserve Craig Cook who won the National League Riders championship last season as a Buxton Hitmen entry.
“It’s a great opportunity for Charles to get back into the sport and put himself in the shop window for any interested Premier League tracks,” said Comets’ team manager Ian Thomas.
There had been a couple of Premier League clubs showing interest during the winter but Wright wasn’t certain about returning to racing until after he’d undergone an operation on his troublesome wrist.
That operation proved to be successful and Wright is now looking forward to resuming his career with the Hitmen.
Wright has not had a chance to race competitively yet for the Hitmen but he will on Tuesday when they open their campaign at League new boys Dudley Heathens.
