Press Release - 16 June

WORKINGTON COMETS 2010
SPONSORED BY THE THOMAS ARMSTRONG GROUP
AND NEW TEAM PARTNERS
PRESS RELEASE No 31 – June 16th

CHRIS Schramm is back in the Workington Comets side for tonight’s Premier League clash at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium.

Schramm, who is taking over the captaincy from former Sheffield favourite Andre Compton, missed Workington’s last match at Edinburgh on Friday with an ankle injury.

But he proved his fitness on Monday night by taking five rides in the British final at Wolverhampton, although it wasn’t a memorable night for him.

He scored only one point in his third ride but had been under pressure when he suffered a blown engine soon after the start of his first race and was controversially excluded in his second.

“It was halfway through the meeting before I managed to get round the track so I’m taking consolation in the fact that if I hadn’t suffered such bad luck early on I could have scored much better,” he said.

Two former Comets in the meting – James Wright and Simon Stead – had been fancied to figure prominently but neither even made the semi-final and didn’t win a race between them.

With Schramm back to ride at Owlerton and new signing Kenny Ingalls preparing for his second meeting in Workington colours the Comets are looking to avenge a recent home defeat by the Tigers.

Team manager Ian Thomas said: “They looked good at Derwent Park and shocked us so it’s up to us to go there and give them some of their own medicine. It’s going to be tough but I think we have some guys who can score well round Owlerton.”

Sheffield have Josef Franc back after a month out with a shoulder injury and he missed the win at Derwent Park. Josh Auty, one of the stars in that victory, has declared himself fit after being confined to bed at the week-end with a virus.

On Saturday it will be back to Derwent Park for the visit of Scunthorpe and there’s an immediate re-match as the Scorpions stage their second leg on Sunday.

“We seem to get these little spells where we are particularly busy so three meetings in four days isn’t particularly new,” said Thomas.

The following week-end will see home and away matches in the Premier League Knockout Cup against Berwick Bandits with the Comets having to travel on the Saturday (June 26) whilst staging the return 24 hours later on the Sunday.

That’s going to be a busy day at Derwent Park as Workington Town rugby league club will be playing in the afternoon against South Wales.
